Education: Understanding the Four Cs of Diamonds
Carat: Carat is a measure of a diamond's weight, not its size. One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams. Larger diamonds are rarer and, therefore, more valuable, but it's important to remember that a diamond's value is also influenced by its other characteristics – the cut, color, and clarity.
Cut: The cut of a diamond refers to how well it has been shaped and faceted. It is one of the most critical factors affecting a diamond's beauty. A well-cut diamond will exhibit extraordinary brilliance and sparkle, as the angles and facets are optimized to interact with light, creating a stunning visual display.
Color: Diamonds come in a range of colors, from colorless to various shades of yellow and brown. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades diamonds on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Colorless diamonds are the most valuable, as they allow light to pass through with minimal interference.
Clarity: Clarity refers to the presence of internal or external flaws, known as inclusions and blemishes, respectively. These tiny imperfections can affect a diamond's brilliance. Diamonds are graded for clarity on a scale ranging from Flawless (no imperfections visible under 10x magnification) to Included (imperfections visible to the naked eye).
